Everyone is going mad for teatox, and there is now a whole world of varieties out there to trial, but do they work?

If you’re looking to drop a few pounds, the short answer is no, no teatox will make you lose weight by drinking tea alone, this isn’t the quick fix that some have been made out to be, but they can help you in other ways . . .

Firstly, it is a really great motivator, and I would definitely recommend it to someone who is looking for a kick start to commit to a healthier lifestyle and diet – by knowing I’d spent £20 on the tea, I didn’t want to then ruin it by not eating correctly and waste both the tea and money. Secondly it does make you feel fresher, and cleansed, this is maybe slightly psychological, but the herbal ingredients can help to flush out toxins from within your body. Finally we all love receiving a delivery, and by being excited by starting your teatox, you’re more motivated to stick to the diet plan, the real weapon!

I actually wrote this post nearly two years ago now, after I tried ‘Bootea’, one of the most popular brands, however I feel like everything I thought then still stands, and there is now even more teatox detox’s available, much to my amazement!

So Bootea offers an eating plan to be followed along with drinking a ‘day’ teabag every morning, and a ‘night’ teabag every other night, which does pre warn you that it can have a laxative effect, and it is advised to start your teatox when you have a couple of days off work/uni/school to accommodate for this.  I never found this a huge problem personally and it didn’t stop me from doing anything I usually would do, it just made me feel like my body was actually ‘detoxing’, my motivation for trying the tea! It isn’t anything to be worried about!

The tea bags themselves tasted fine, (if you forget and it goes cold it’s not quite so great), they are easy to use, and don’t leave bits floating around in your mug which is always good, but following the diet plan really is the key to getting results, and when you see a ‘transformation’ photo, it is sticking to the diet which is making the difference, not really the tea. They advise you to eat no meat as it contains toxins that the detox is trying to flush out of your body, but as someone who doesn’t like a lot of fish or cheese, it didn’t sound overly appealing to me, as well as the decrease in protein my diet would be suffering, which I usually focussed so hard on increasing! This diet plan perhaps isn’t very well suited to a fitness regime involving a lot of weight work in the gym, but that is not who the product is aimed at, and the diet suggested would work well with other exercise plans with a focus more on weight loss. Following the plan also takes a fair amount of organisation, you need to be preparing food to take with you for the day, and it may not always be practical.

Overall I personally didn’t get the results that are often advertised, and I unfortunately can’t track down any photos (however they would not have shown any huge differences), but I did not stick to the diet plan very well and just ate healthy food (mostly due to being quite a fussy eater). I personally don’t think the odd meal of white meat damaged the detox too badly, but I can’t imagine my lack of results was completely due to eating a few meals of chicken.

It is also always important to remember that the transformation pictures advertised by the company are going to be the best, and most extreme, and in some cases not even real, and not everyone can obtain results like this for a whole world of reasons. I did feel fresher however, and I did lose that sluggish feeling you get after a few days of eating unhealthily!

I will point out that as part of my diet I drink a lot of flavoured green tea, and I personally have found this just as effective as the teatox, and at a tiny fraction of the price. My best advice would be to trial a few different teas available in supermarkets, because some are really good! My current favourite is Taylors Strawberry & Vanilla Green Tea, but I also found the Pukka Detox tea to feel really fresh and very similar to the Bootea! Give this a try if you’re looking for a cheaper alternative, it’s £2.49 for 20!!

If you need a motivator, a teatox could be great, however simply sticking to a healthy diet plan is what will benefit your weight loss in the long run, but from my experience, the tea does make you FEEL healthier and happier, and if that’s what you need, a teatox could be a great start.
