So its January, the christmas spirit has well and truly died, it’s cold, it’s grey, and you’re out of excuses as to why it’s acceptable to eat your third helping of desert. Getting your diet back on track in January is hard, and not that fun, I have the worse sugar cravings for what feels like most of the day, so here are some of the foods I eat to try and curb the cravings whilst still (trying to) stay healthy!
Top 10 Healthy Snacks/Deserts
Apple with Peanut Butter
Apples are great for getting in fibre (always eat the skin) and they have loads of vitamin A and C too. Peanut butter is a protein source, and fairly high in fat and calories, but these are healthy fats that your body needs, and this will also leave you feeling more satisfied than sugary alternatives! I am currently using a high-protein brand called Hi-Pro in smooth.

Fibre One Bars
These are expensive for their size, they’re very small, but they taste SO good for something to low in calories and high in fibre, chocolate brownie is my favourite but lemon cheesecake is also really good.
Berries
Berries like strawberries, raspberries and blueberries tend to be the fruits that are lowest in carbs, and taste the best, its a win win situation.
Itsu Dark Chocolate Rice Cakes
These are surprisingly filling for a rice cake, and the layer of chocolate is thicker than most – bonus.

Oppo Ice Cream & Jelly
If you haven’t heard of Oppo, you need to try it, it’s only 38 calories per scoop, which makes it so guilt free! Any no added sugar jelly is great, I also love the raspberry and cranberry 10 calorie jelly pots, this is the perfect desert when you want to pig out, but need something to stop you! Frozen yoghurt like YooMoo is also great!

Greek Yoghurt with Honey
Total 0% fat yoghurt is a great way of getting your protein in take up, without feeling like you’re entire diet is consisting of shakes and bars. It can taste pretty sour on it’s own, but add 8-10g of honey into 170g of yoghurt takes the sharpness away, and makes it taste pretty decent. I add a sachet of sweet cinnamon quaker oats in as a breakfast, and you’d be amazed at how good it tastes and how long you feel full for. If you’re looking for something a little more aesthetic, add some no added sugar jam to the bottom and some granola to the top and make yourself a bircher style sundae!

Frozen Grapes
Love grapes? Freeze them, you eat less in one go and they still taste great!
Dark Chocolate
Sometimes, you just need some chocolate. Stick to at least 70% cocoa, and it’s actually fairly nutritious, and again although high in fat, they are on the whole good fats when eaten in moderation. I never used to like dark chocolate at all, but that actually stopped me from eating too much, and now I really quite like it, give it a go!
Eat Natural Protein Packed
Eat Natural bars are a great snack for on the go just to throw in your bag, the protein packed on is good, and I also love the apricot and yoghurt ones!

Whitworth’s Fruit Shot
A lot of people don’t, but I actually really like dried fruit, and I love sultanas, I could eat a whole bag (I wouldn’t recommend this, although natural sugar, your sugar intake would go through the roof, and it may not be amazing for your digestive system either). However these little packets make sure you don’t over eat, and also add in pieces of biscuit and chocolate, perfect.
Top 8 Protein Bars

I am also guilty of being a huge protein bar fan. You should always ideally try to get as much of your protein as possible from food sources such as meat and beans and nuts, however I know better than anyone that this just isn’t very practical sometimes, and this is when a protein bar can save you, throw one in to your bag and have it as a snack, or even as lunch on the go, these are my current top 8, and (to me anyway) taste really pretty good! Admittedly the macros are different for all of them and some are a little high in fat or sugar (tend to be the nicer ones) so are harder to fit in, so its always worth checking, but if you’re going to treat yourself, you’re better to go with a slightly more indulgent protein bar than anything else!
1. Protein Dynamix Dynabar (this wins as my all time favourite)
2. Grenade Carb Killa White Chocolate Cookie Bar
3. Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough/Cookies and Cream Quest Bar
4. USN Protein Delite
5. Atkins Chocolate Brownie
6. MyProtein Protein Brownie
7. Atkins Hazelnut Crunch
8. MyProtein Rocky Road Protein Cookie
